Slow Down, You Move Too Fast

“Slow down, you move too fast. You got to make the morning last. Just kicking down the cobble stones. Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy.” – Simon and Garfunkel, 59th St. Bridge Song

Do you ever notice how fast you move?

If you’re like me, you walk fast to the car in the morning, you drive fast, you eat fast and you might even talk fast. In general you move fast.  You probably don’t even notice. That’s the speed you’ve been moving for a long time.

What if you slowed down?

I have a 2 year old.  She’s been walking since she was about 13 months.  In her world, she moves fast. But, to me, it’s super slow. When I walk with her, I am forced to take my pace way down. It’s hard to walk that slow.

Watching her, I realized that she sees all the flowers along her path. She notices unusual cracks in the sidewalk. She hears a dump truck three blocks away and birds whistling around her. It’s the little, but most amazing things she sees and appreciates.

An interesting thing happens when I slow down to her pace. I notice more too. I feel the spring air on my skin. I hear the sounds of my neighborhood. I see my neighbors on the street walking their dogs or jogging by me.

Could you walk like a toddler?

Do you think you’d be calmer and more peaceful? Would your world open up? Would beauty be more evident to you? Would you have more perspective about your life? Would you connect with God? Would you better enjoy nature?

I think the answer is yes to all.

It’ll take work, believe me. It’s hard to slow down, really hard. But, if you think you’ll miss out on something while you slow down as you walked to your car in the morning or to your office from your car or you slow down your drive or get down to your kid’s level. You won’t miss anything. And, you won’t be late.

Give it a shot today. What will you see?
